Initiative TitleReview, evaluate, and select an Online Collaboration Software Suite

Critical Information, Notes, Justification, Rationale

The importance of maintaining a uniform end user experience has been highlighted by the need for the college to move to a mainly remote workforce during the 2020 global pandemic.  While the integrity of the classroom and instructional freedom must be maintained, not having a consistent method of online collaboration is detrimental to the learning and working experience at SUNY Orange.  This need has been brought to the forefront by student surveys and discussions with leadership personnel across the spectrum of our community.  The embracing of an online collaboration suite will be one of the discussions that the ITS Department can help guide in an overall plan to better bridge technology gap hindering student’s ability to achieve academic success.  This initiative directly relates to the current strategic plan initiative number one, Empowering Student Success, meeting goal number one of identifying and reducing barriers to academic and personal success while also meeting goal number three of increasing flexibility for the students of today and tomorrow.  This initiative will also allow us to build toward the strategic plan initiative number three, Sustaining and Invigorating Our Planned Future, by allowing for a coordinated effort across the college to create targeted professional development avenues to achieve strategic goal number three, improving the effectiveness of our human resources to achieve holistic, student-centered outcomes that enhance the student and employee experience.  By focusing on the same experience for all of our students, faculty, and staff, we can not only generate training materials but foster an environment of collaboration by allowing students, faculty, and staff to work in partnership together, learning from and teaching each other to better use this software suite to meet the needs of our diverse and evolving student population.

Institutional Goals

Goal How will the initiative support this institutional goal?
Reducing the complexity of the online collaboration experience will reduce the concerns that have been expressed by students regarding the need to learn a multitude of varying online collaboration tools that currently changes due to the courses and instructors for a given semester.
By having a focused and holistic approach to online collaboration, we will be able to better train our workforces and provide flexibility for students to meet their aspirations.
By focusing on a singular suite of tools, we will be able to better provide more focused training resources, better utilize our limited resources both personnel and capital, and reduce the complexity of support to a concentrated suite of software.
