Initiative Title | Smart Identification Card |
---|---|
Submitted in Previous Year(s) | No |
Critical Information, Notes, Justification, Rationale | Currently, employee and student identification cards contain no data - simply a picture for identification purposes. Employees and students are required to secure other cards for food service, door access and other purposes. Smart cards allow a student to provide identification, make purchases, allow secure door access, pay for classes, disburse monies to student accounts, and let administrators know |
Consequences of this initiative not being funded | Without funding, the employee/student identification card will continue to operate as only a picture ID. Most students do not take the time to secure a proper SUNY Orange id card since it provides them absolutely no benefit. The smart ID card can provide a more secure campus environment and assist with retention by providing a means to track classroom attendance and identify students-at-risk. |

The PBIE Committee did not rank this initiative because it did not strike us as feasible, at least as written. It would require a great deal of integration and development across current and proposed software and hardware systems, and a substantial investment of IT time, costs not considered in the proposal.
