Smart Identification Card - submitted in conjunction with Information Technology, CIO Office

Initiative TitleSmart Identification Card - submitted in conjunction with Information Technology, CIO Office
Submitted in Previous Year(s)No
Critical Information, Notes, Justification, Rationale

Currently, employee and student identification cards contain no data - simply a picture for identification purposes.  Employees and students are required to secure other cards for food service, door access and other purposes.

Smart cards allow a student to provide identification, make purchases, allow secure door access, pay for classes, disburse monies to student accounts, and let administrators know which students are in which classroom, hall, or building, in real time.

Consequences of this initiative not being funded

Without funding, the employee/student identification card will continue to operate as only a picture ID.  Most students do not take the time to secure a proper SUNY Orange id card since it provides them absolutely no benefit.  The smart ID card can provide a more secure campus environment and assist with retention by providing a means to track classroom attendance and identify students-at-risk.

Level 3 (Student Services, VP Office)

Until such time as there is a commitment to utilizing swipe cards for all student transactions at the college the cost of this initiative is prohibitive given other needs.
