Specialized Learning Assistance for Liberal Arts Course

Initiative TitleSpecialized Learning Assistance for Liberal Arts Course
Submitted in Previous Year(s)2007
Critical Information, Notes, Justification, RationaleA good number of students are not doing well in entry level courses. They are not demonstrating necessary study skills or information management skills when there is an information literacy and or web enhanced componant to a course. This indicates a need for expanded learning assistance and specialized academic support. Learning assistance/tutoring is a key retention tool for all students but particularly for students who are at risk because they have not yet developed adequate college study strategies, critical thinking and information management skills.
Consequences of this initiative not being fundedHigh failure rate . Students who have a low grade point average may be on academic probation or be separated from the college. Students may step out due to poor grades and low satisfaction with their academic progress.

Prioritization Notes

Level 4 (PBIE Committee)

Commitment to student success is one of the highest priorities of the college and the PBIE committee evaluated this initiative as clearly furthering that goal. This pilot project seeks to explore ways to increase student success in liberal arts courses, an area where currently there is no specifically dedicated assistance. This initiative would go beyond what is currently offered in the tutoring center by assigning a specialized tutor to a specific liberal arts course and students in that course. Subsequently, the tutor would be much more familiar with the course’s material and expectations and be better prepared to assist students enrolled in the course. The potential benefits of this initiative are obvious and the committee feels this pilot project should be a priority of the college.
