Steps in hillside between 54 Grand St. and Tower/Maple buildings

Initiative TitleSteps in hillside between 54 Grand St. and Tower/Maple buildings
Submitted in Previous Year(s)No
Critical Information, Notes, Justification, RationaleWe have converted the former Kindercollege space at 54 Grand St. into additional classrooms, including dedicated spaces for ESL and studio art classes. In addition to the Physical Education classes we already hold in the Grand St. building, these new classrooms will significantly increase the foot traffic between Grand St. and the Tower building, particularly in the evening when most classrooms will be in use. Currently students and staff walk down a steep and rocky slope between the upper and lower buildings, particularly treacherous during rainy or icy weather. The college needs to construct a series of steps on the hill to protect students and staff moving between the two buildings. While the new campus construction might ultimately solve the problem, we are likely to occupy the Grand St. building for three to five more years before new construction is fully realized. It is unacceptable to risk students' and staff's safety for this extended period of time when a simple staircase would solve the problem.
Consequences of this initiative not being fundedOnce the county completes its purchase of the Tower/Maple properties, we will be held responsible for any injuries on the property. It would be hard to argue we were unaware of the danger students face in navigating this literally slippery slope!

Prioritization Notes

Level 4 (PBIE Committee)

The construction of stairs/steps would expedite travel while providing a safer terrain between academic buildings. Such construction would also address the liability issue that the college will assume when the county completes the purchase of the Tower/maple properties.
