Critical Information, Notes, Justification, Rationale	A good number of students are not doing well in entry level Biology courses. This indicates a need for expanded learning assistance and specialized academic support. Biology courses are being considered for inclusion in learning communities for new students who are starting out in developmental education. Supplemental learning assistance/tutoring is a key retention tool for all students but particularly for students who are at risk because they have not yet developed college level reading and writing skills.
Consequences of this initiative not being funded	High failure rate for gateway courses. Student attrition. With a high number of students needing to retake a course, there are fewer seats available for students taking the course for the first time.

MIDDLESTATES Standard11: Educational Offerings b: It is recommended that Orange County Community College develop a comprehensive assessment program, which links the assessment of student learning and program outcomes relative to program and College goals and objectives. It is further recommended that program and course goals be stated in terms of student learning outcomes. The student learning outcomes can, and should, then be used to evaluate the effectiveness of curricular, co-curricular and extra-curricular learning experiences.
MIDDLESTATES Standard13: Related Educational Activities a: Developmental student learning is very important for the success of under-prepared students. As the college does not utilize consistent, student-specific data on the progress of these students, appropriate resources should be made available to assist the Developmental Education Program in tracking the progress of students and assessing their success after completion of developmental courses. Adequate software, and qualified and sufficient staffing to effectively and efficiently utilize it, should be available to gather important data about the progress of students.
STRATEGIC I: Develop and implement an Academic Master Plan that guides the renewal of current programs and services, the development of new programs and services, and formulizes the allocation of resources effectively.
AMP II: Curriculum Change/Program Design a: Explore the need for evening, weekend and non-traditional scheduling options for the delivery of programs and curriculum to better meet the needs of diverse students and the workplace
