Technology Revitalization for Learning and Collaboration Spaces

Initiative TitleTechnology Revitalization for Learning and Collaboration Spaces
Submitted in Previous Year(s)2024
Critical Information, Notes, Justification, Rationale

All technology equipment operates within a defined lifecycle and has an anticipated End of Life (EOL), including projectors and large-panel displays. To ensure an optimal learning and working environment across campus, it is essential to proactively upgrade aging display technology in classrooms and conference spaces. As part of this initiative, we will begin replacing classroom and conference room technology in the Rowley Center for Science and Engineering. We are also engaging with faculty and key stakeholders to better understand their needs and ensure that these upgrades enhance the teaching, learning, and meeting experience.

Consequences of this initiative not being funded

If the replacement of aging classroom and conference room technology is not completed, the following consequences could arise:

  1. Degraded User Experience: Outdated display technology may result in poor image quality, reduced functionality, and reliability issues, negatively impacting teaching, learning, and collaboration experiences.

  2. Increased Equipment Failures: Aging technology is more prone to breakdowns and malfunctions, leading to disruptions during classes, meetings, and events, which could harm productivity and create frustration.

  3. Higher Maintenance Costs: The cost of repairing and maintaining outdated equipment often surpasses the investment required for new, reliable technology, straining budgets over time.

  4. Limited Support: End-of-Life (EOL) equipment is typically no longer supported by manufacturers, making repairs difficult or impossible and leaving the institution vulnerable to technical issues without viable solutions.

  5. Decreased Engagement: Inefficient technology can hinder faculty's ability to deliver engaging content and affect students' learning outcomes, potentially diminishing the institution’s reputation.

  6. Incompatibility with Modern Tools: Older technology may not integrate well with new software, systems, or teaching tools, limiting the adoption of innovative approaches and reducing operational efficiency.

  7. Safety and Security Risks: Outdated technology may lack modern cybersecurity protections, increasing the risk of vulnerabilities that could compromise institutional data and systems.

By addressing these risks proactively, the institution ensures a seamless, effective, and future-ready educational and operational environment.

Institutional Goals

Goal How will the initiative support this institutional goal?
The replacement of aging classroom and conference room technology will improve the student learning experience in several meaningful ways: Enhanced Visual Clarity: Upgraded projectors and large-panel displays will provide sharper, brighter, and more reliable visuals, ensuring that all students, regardless of seating location, can clearly view instructional materials and presentations. Improved Accessibility: Modern technology often includes accessibility features such as higher-resolution displays, compatibility with assistive devices, and customizable settings, making the learning environment more inclusive for all students. Seamless Integration with Modern Tools: New display technologies will integrate more effectively with current software and teaching tools, enabling faculty to leverage interactive and multimedia resources that enhance engagement and understanding. Reduced Disruptions: Reliable and state-of-the-art technology minimizes interruptions caused by equipment failures, ensuring uninterrupted teaching and learning sessions. Interactive Capabilities: Many newer displays support interactivity, such as touchscreens or annotation features, allowing for a more hands-on, collaborative, and dynamic learning environment. Support for Hybrid and Remote Learning: Modern technology often includes features that support hybrid and remote learning, such as built-in cameras, microphones, and compatibility with video conferencing platforms, ensuring continuity in education regardless of format. Future-Ready Learning Environment: Upgraded technology demonstrates a commitment to innovation and progress, preparing students to engage with tools and systems they are likely to encounter in their professional careers. These improvements directly contribute to a richer, more engaging, and effective learning experience for students, aligning with the institution’s commitment to academic excellence.
