UNDER-PREPARED STUDENTS

  • Encourage team work
  • Faculty generous with time for students
  • Block scheduling
  • Encourage study groups

TECHNOLOGY

  • During summer 2014, the following Computer Labs will be upgraded: BT121, 253, and 355.
  • A three-year replacement plan is recommended for computers in our labs, but sometimes this has stretched to 4-5 years.
  • All courses have, at minimum, WebO Angel shells

FACILITIES

  • Student furniture, particularly chairs, should be reviewed every 10 years for dangerous conditions.
  • There is a need for an office designated for adjuncts, with computers, so they can access their email and also for private student/adjunct sessions. This becomes more critical as we have a growing number of adjuncts.
  • There is a need for a study area for students in the department, so that they are able to study together.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

  • Chris Rigby and Cartmell Warrington were invited to present at CIT 2014, the presentation: Introducing Virtualization Via OpenStack “Cloud” System to Technology Students.
  • Chris Rigby and Cartmell Warrington traveled to New York City for the Spring Break week to obtain further training in a boot camp style setting to enhance their skills and learn the latest developments in OpenStack, “Cloud” computing.
  • Chris Rigby consulted last summer for educational startup noodle.org, adding Natural Language Processing routines of their search engine. .
    • Arlin Bartlett continues to collaborate with Pam Rice on the sustainable bus stop (Architecture and Electrical Technology)
    • One instructor working on his PhD
    • The department hired 3 new adjuncts. Two of them have Masters Degrees and the other is working on his PhD.

ACCESSIBILITY OF OFFERINGS

  • Department has an Angel shell for all courses
  • As stated in other areas of this document, the Applied Technology Dept. makes every effort to foster an atmosphere of collaboration with other departments.  It is hopeful in the future that we will be able to offer courses that are co-taught with other disciplines.
  • Critical thinking skills, as well as information literacy, are being infused into all courses.  It is still recommended to include Technical Writing in other programs that currently don’t require such a course.
  • Review of current textbooks to make certain the ones being used give the students the required knowledge to be successful in the field.
