  • Revamping Electrical Technology program – department was directed not to proceed with this project at this time.

  • Virtualization – was added to Operating Systems class as a pilot program and faculty produced a 20-page lab on the topic and was successful. As a result, an IITG grant was applied for and received. Expand the use of “Cloud Technology” in other classes.

  • Programming contests – Participated in a Regional college level contest for the second time, which was held in Rhode Island. Students also participated in the PACE University contest again this year. The department is looking into hosting a programming contest for local area high school students in order to get them interested in computer programming. The contest can also be used as a recruitment tool.

  • Expand use of Linux - now using Linux in the following classes: Network Security, Assembler Language, Comp Sci 1& 2, Data Structures, Operating Systems, Database Management and System Design, C++, and even (slightly) in Networking I also.

  • Discussion is ongoing on the proposed name change for the department. The name of the department would more accurately reflect its courses, content and goals, as The Department of Computer Science and Technology.  Many people are confused by the name Applied Technologies.

  • The department intends to review some of its textbooks to ensure the books being utilized reflect the knowledge required for students to succeed in the field.

  • The “Hour of Code” will take place December 8 – 14. The department plans to participate again this year, and will start at the beginning of the semester to encourage student to participate. The department also plans to reach out to area schools in order to get those students involved. In addition, this could also be used as a recruitment tool.
