Critical Information, Notes, Justification, Rationale

A top priority since 2007 has been to offer the AS Business Administration degree at Newburgh campus. This priority supports the expansion and growth of the Newburgh Campus (which has been part of the Strategic Plan for many years). In light of the recent Guided Pathways/SOEX discussions, the task force recommendations, and the fall 2018 increase in the Newburgh campus enrollment; the choice of the AS Business Administration degree would assure that Newburgh students are on the correct pathway to meet their goals from the beginning.

Institutional Research provided the department with a report of all Business students in fall 2017, their declared degree program, and where they took courses. This data supports the department’s goal of offering the AS Business Administration degree at the Newburgh Campus. For the AS Business Administration degree (which can only be declared as a major at the Middletown campus) there were 202 students for fall 2017. Of those, 26 lived in Newburgh.  When it is expanded to a 15 miles radius (to determine the campus that is closest to that student’s home), the number of potential majors for the Newburgh campus increases to 72 students. Of those 72 students, 27 of them took their course work at the Newburgh campus only. If we truly want to guide students to the degree pathway that best meets their goals from the very beginning, we need to offer the AS Business Administration degree as a choice at the Newburgh campus.

In addition, this priority supports the Innovation Grand Street proposal. Innovation Grand Street will be targeting business sectors and this degree programs can help prepare students for the sectors. The degree program (along with the AAS Business Management) will help to develop the business skills of student to feed the workforce and reach the goals of private investment, jobs, and community renewal by having a prepared workforce in the pipeline.

Consequences of this initiative not being funded

many students have stated the AS Business Administration degree as their major at the Newburgh campus.   Adding this degree program will allow for growth in enrollment and a better choice for students who prefer this campus. It would decrease stakeholder dissatisfaction and students attending another college if they cannot attend at the Middletown campus.
