(VIEW NOTES) Update equipment in science laboratory classrooms

Initiative Title(VIEW NOTES) Update equipment in science laboratory classrooms
Submitted in Previous Year(s)2008/9/10
Critical Information, Notes, Justification, RationaleThe laboratory equipment in Harriman and Horton is out of date, obsolete, and much of the equipment does not funtion. These labs need to be upgraded. The department has obtained a few grants for some large pieces of equipment but a yearly fund is needed to steadily update/ modernize the labs.
Consequences of this initiative not being fundedThese labs support the General Education natural sciences silo , AS engineering, AS Math & Science, required courses for other degrees. It will become increasingly more difficult to offer quality lab courses if the equipment is not replaced.

Institutional Goals

Goal How will the initiative support this institutional goal?
All of our chemistry and physical science courses have labs, as required by the natural science General Education silo.
we are still using equipment from the 1960's and much of it does not work
Without functioning equipment we can not offer a quality laboratory experience to our students
equipment is out of data by decades.

Prioritization Notes

Level 2 (Business Math Science and Technology, AVP Office)

A prioritized list must be generated by science departments so that as capital funds become available, equipment can be purchased in prioritized order.

Level 4 (PBIE Committee)

The laboratory equipment being used in the science labs in Harriman and Horton is out of date, obsolete, and some is not functional. Much of the equipment was obtained before 1970, and faculty often spend more time repairing and maintaining the equipment than using it to teach. It will become increasingly more difficult to offer quality lab courses if the equipment is not replaced.
