For the 2021-22 academic year, the Nursing department anticipates that the effects of the pandemic will continue to impact the ability of the department to adequately prepare students to meet program learning outcomes. Given the limitations on in-person hands-on learning and clinical placements that have resulted from the necessary restrictions that began in Spring 2020 and are likely to continue into the next year at least, students are likely to be less well prepared for clinical practice upon graduation. We must put emphasis on recreating real-life scenarios and transforming the classroom that reflect the clinical circumstances that students will encounter when they join the workforce. In addition, the personal circumstances that the students are enduring will also impact the success of students and their retention to graduation. Therefore, we must develop and implement strategies to improve the program completion rates and maintain or improve NCLEX pass rates. Our outcome on retention has experienced a decline in the past year, perhaps attributable to the loss of seasoned full-time faculty and replacement with adjuncts with less experience and who tend to have a high turnover rate. In order to meet our goals, and to maintain the rigor and quality of the program, open full-time faculty positions will need to be filled with highly qualified candidates. In addition, student support activities will need to be expanded, including increased skill lab support staff hours; and we will need to make a significant investment in our equipment and technology to keep pace with a rapidly changing health care environment.

Department Goals

Specific things the department wishes to achieve or accomplish this academic year.

# Department Goal
1 Provide quality simulated clinical instruction using current technology and updated equipment (for example, new, sustainable manikins for Simulation, Med-dispense and other updated equipment for multisensory and skill laboratories).
2 Recruit and retain full-time quality nurse educators and technical lab assistants in sufficient numbers/hours to achieve program outcomes.
3 Support student success to increase program completion rate to at least 75% and maintain NCLEX pass rate at 90% or more for all programs (Newburgh, Middletown Day, Middletown evening).
