Recruitment and retention of faculty

Initiative TitleRecruitment and retention of faculty
Submitted in Previous Year(s)2019
Critical Information, Notes, Justification, Rationale

The Nursing department faces a significant challenge of recruiting and retaining new faculty, while competing with higher salaries paid to nurses outside of academia. Currently we have four open faculty full-time lines that were not allowed to be filled last Spring. One faculty member is participating in the PRT process in fall 2020 for tenure, as well as two tenure-track and one full-time temporary candidate for retention spring 2021. It is critical that we not only attract quality full-time faculty, but we need to foster their development and success as nurse educators. Therefore we need to continue to mentor and develop newer faculty and fill open positions so as not to jeopardize the quality of the program.

Consequences of this initiative not being funded

Continued high faculty attrition rates and failure to fill vacancies in the Nursing department will result in program quality being negatively impacted. Completion rates and NCLEX scores will decline or to decrease below benchmark and state/national averages and could result in program closure.

Department GoalsRecruit and retain full-time quality nurse educators and technical lab assistants in sufficient numbers/hours to achieve program outcomes.
