Facilities improvements

Critical Information, Notes, Justification, Rationale

Overview: Several instructional spaces that serve the Liberal Arts Division will need upgrades as the format of delivery changes. For example, the Criminal Justice Dept / courses now have new simulation software that can be incorporated into courses. Appropriate space for utilizing this technology is important. Some Criminal Justice law courses use mock trials as an effective pedagogical approach to teaching and learning. Having facilities that can accommodate this new approach is important.

In Fall 2017, the English Department is initiating a pilot that has the potential to change the way developmental reading and Writing is offered (i,e, Integrated Reading and Writing). Currently, the Reading Center and the Writing Center in the Bio-Tech Building are very distinct and separate spaces. This will have to change if the pedagogical pilot takes off as anticipated.

The Theater is a venue not only for our student performance but also for College events and events for outside groups. There is concern about the state of the flooring on the stage.

Some items that were not included when this initiative was formed by combining subordinate initiatives:

Current Honors space in Morrison Hall is crowded, awkward and sub-optimal. Incremental improvements should be pursued until a more suitable space can be identified.

Combined from Subordinate departments:

High-traffic/multi-use area.  Carpeting is stained and unsightly.   This item previously submitted as a renovation request.

Existing floor at least 30 years old. Masonite that covers entire floor needs to be replaced.  The surface is no longer smooth that poses a danger to actors and dancers.  This item has been submitted in previous budget requests.

Enhance academic program with more technology and hands on type lab programming. Prepare lesson plans and conduct labs for use of force simulator. Lab coordinator will  work with local law enforcement to ensure safe transport and return of expensive equipment as well as update equipment regularly.

This support center opens directly into the Tutoring/Learning Support facility.  There is no separate entry way.  As a result, the conversation, movement, and any noise created is heard in the Writing Center creating a distraction for students, instructors, and tutors

Consequences of this initiative not being funded

Condition of carpeting is an embarrassment.

Potential injuries to anyone using Orange Hall Theatre.

Use of Force Simulator will be under utilized and not kept up to date.

Institutional Goals

Goal How will the initiative support this institutional goal?
As noted above we will be entering into collaborative community initiatives with our local law enforcement partners specifically in the area of the use of force. The enhanced educational advantages to our students will make them better candidates for employment by law enforcement agencies and by offering the technology to our local partners we will be enhancing their training initiatives that will greatly benefit our community.
Develop our students skills in the area of technology by introducing them to the Crime Zone and Crash Zone technology soft ware. These programs are widely utilized by local law enforcement and the abilities of our students to become proficient in the utilization of this technology could be a valuable asset to local law enforcement. Adding a lab in the area of the use of force would be a great asset for our students in developing their understanding of how these situations evolve under stressful circumstances.
We are offerring the Use of Force Technology to our local law enforcement partners (Sheriff's Department) in the training of their personnel. Already local law enforcement participated in a train the trainer session with Criminal Justice Instructors, a process that was mutually beneficial to both parties. We hope to develop more collaborative programming and will need a coordinator and space to realize these ambitious college and community initiatives
