Initiative Title | Hire admissions recruiter position - Full-time |
---|---|
Submitted in Previous Year(s) | 2017 |
Critical Information, Notes, Justification, Rationale | With the demand to increase enrollment, The Office of Admissions would like to request funding for a full-time admissions recruiter position. This person would recruit at local community events and would act as a community liaison between SUNY Orange, Admissions & the local community. Currently admissions has three professional staff members that recruit in multiple counties throughout the fall and spring semester. Having another staff member would allow us to be more strategic in terms of what type of student population we would like to increase (i.e. adult population). Our focal point would be on recruiting adult and veterans along with specialty programs such as the honors program. We would like the opportunity to split a position with Elaine Torda, Coordinator of the Honors program, to help with her recruitment efforts in our local high schools. |
Consequences of this initiative not being funded | As the institution and administration makes a push to increase our enrollment activity in Newburgh and our potential new Port Jervis location, this would be a great opportunity to have additional support to help increase our visibility in the community. Not having this position would not give us the opportunity to attend events that may attract new markets and student populations. |

|
Having an additional staff member would allow the admissions office to strategically market and recruit non-traditional, adult, veteran and honors students. This type of recruiting will help us compensate for the low high school graduation rates, which will continue to decline over the next 5-10 years. |
|
Having this position would enable us to attend more community and recruitment events. In addition, we would be able to target market the adult population, which would support administrations vision to increase this student population. More focus can be given to the Newburgh Campus and the ability to serve the adult market. With areas such as West Point and Stewart Air Force base, we have an incredible opportunity to increase visibility and enhance our adult market in Newburgh. |

Although ranked lower than some of the other priorities, I appreciate the need for expanding the Admissions staff especially as we consider Port Jervis and Innovation Grand Street.
The size of the admissions staff has not changed in over a decade and the demands on the office continue to grow. I applaud Maynard and his team for their exemplary work and know that a recruiter would only extend the opportunities to meet with prospective students on and off campus.

This initiative comes back to us this academic year; it was part of a more comprehensive initiative that was approved previously. Most components of last year’s “Improve Staffing Levels within Student Services” are currently being funded by budget reallocation. However, the position of admissions recruiter was not searched. Hence that office is still in need of increasing its staffing levels. More support is needed in admissions, an additional recruiter will allow us to expand our recruitment efforts in both quantity and quality.
