Improve learning facilities

Initiative TitleImprove learning facilities
Submitted in Previous Year(s)2018
Critical Information, Notes, Justification, Rationale

Several items were identified within departmental plans:

Orange Hall 26, a high volume classroom that also serves as the green room for theatrical performance, needs refurbishment. At minimum, the carpet should be replaced but the room could use cosmetic refreshment.

Orange Hall 25 is a room that is not in use but could be put to effective use. Ideally the room should have augmented electrical and data service to support computer usage within it.

Replace stage floor in Theater and upgrade ticketing with two new computers

Begin planning Honors move to Horton Hall in order to provide better facilities for Honors program classes and activities

Consistent promotional signage that dovetails with SOEX work (program maps) and presents a consistent look and feel

Relocate Reading and Writing Centers on the Middletown Campus to second floor in Library

Combine the Reading and Writing Centers on both campuses (this will require doors to be installed within existing walls)

Whiteboard replacements in rooms where existing whiteboards are no longer effective

Ensure adequate electrical services and storage capacity for computer carts in select  classrooms in which ENG 098 will be taught

Consequences of this initiative not being funded

Deterioration of College's reputation if learning spaces appear tired and over-used.

Prioritization Notes

Level 4 (PBIE Committee)

As it did last year, the committee feels that this is an important initiative, as it includes improvements urgently needed in classrooms. Feedback from the survey indicated that this should be a high priority as well. This initiative speaks to the importance of technology and that teachers should have the equipment which will allow them to “optimize the teaching environment”. The committee feels that these improvements will benefit and support the teaching and learning environment at SUNY Orange.

Level 5 (Cabinet)

$250k state match: Arts and Comm, New Media, Education.
