Outreach / friend-building

Initiative TitleOutreach / friend-building

Critical Information, Notes, Justification, Rationale

Overview: Each department has unique conditions and connections to the greater community. In the case of Arts & Communication, performances, productions and exhibits are key. In the case of the English Department, literary-focused events are key. This initiative is one that sets out to define outreach that is appropriate to each department and the setting aside of resources to ensure that these crucial friend-building outreach activities take place. Coordination between each department and Cultural Affairs is crucial for the success of this initiative.

Brought over from subordinate departments:

Speak with Mike Albright et al. to determine ways in which they could assist us in enhancing our visibility both externally and internally.

Explore social media possibilities.  In-house video production.  Visual Communications students' contributions.  Colt Rock radio station.

To provide a pathway from non-credit programming to the Human Services AS.

Enhance academic program with more technology and hands on type lab programming. Prepare lesson plans and conduct labs for use of force simulator. Lab coordinator will  work with local law enforcement to ensure safe transport and return of expensive equipment as well as update equipment regularly.

Rationale:  Expand options for students who want to become state certified in education at the Early Childhood, Childhood, and Adolescent levels.

Notes:   Mercy has expressed interest in creating articulations with our education programs.  (AA, AS, and possibly AAS) We have even discussed Mercy offering courses at SUNY Orange which would enable our students to obtain their bachelors degree on our campus.  We would like to meet with representatives from Mercy to discuss this further.

Within the list of core courses and within each of the concentration areas in the JRTEP programs we have identified at least one course that has been called into question, either because it is difficult for us to run or because of how it transfers into SUNY New Paltz.  It is crucial that we work with representatives from SUNY New Paltz and SUNY Orange department chairs to reexamine the problematic course options in JRTEP  course sequences with an eye toward optimal transferability for our students.

Such a collaboration would increase student awareness of such offerings as well as emphasize the through line in the study of Humanities.  In addition, the pooling of money and expertise would result in creative offerings.

Expanding these services to the Newburgh Campus will reinforce our commitment to fostering good writing across the curriculum and provide the students on this campus equal support for academic and professional writing tasks

For several years, the Department has held several events during National Poetry Month in April  We have managed to finance these with faculty contributions of time and for refreshments.  It would enhance the student experience as well as increasing community attendance if we could recruit and pay an recognized poet

SUNY Orange's Global Initiative is a college-wide interdisciplinary focus on a topic of global importance. Global Initiative seeks to expand students' horizons, bring academic departments together in collaboration and infuse a global perspective on its curriculum.

Institutional Goals

Goal How will the initiative support this institutional goal?
Global Initiative is founded on the idea of collaboration among and between faculty, staff, and students, on broad range of issues. It is also built on encouraging faculty and staff to dig deeper into topics and subjects, as well as the goal of providing an important educational service to the college and students.
The development of these labs will ensure that our students are keeping pace with the new technologies that are being introduced into the criminal justice field at an alarming pace. It will ensure the highest quality of lab programming into our academic courses.
Develop our students skills in the area of technology by introducing them to the Crime Zone and Crash Zone technology soft ware. These programs are widely utilized by local law enforcement and the abilities of our students to become proficient in the utilization of this technology could be a valuable asset to local law enforcement. Adding a lab in the area of the use of force would be a great asset for our students in developing their understanding of how these situations evolve under stressful circumstances.
We are offerring the Use of Force Technology to our local law enforcement partners (Sheriff's Department) in the training of their personnel. Already local law enforcement participated in a train the trainer session with Criminal Justice Instructors, a process that was mutually beneficial to both parties. We hope to develop more collaborative programming and will need a coordinator and space to realize these ambitious college and community initiatives
