Critical Information, Notes, Justification, Rationale

Overview of the combined initiatives:

Behavioral Sciences: Redefine faculty role as part instruction, part coordination of Human Services program (retirement replacement)

Criminal Justice: As Simulation activities increase, begin with stipend for faculty member to coordinate activities (may eventually require a load abatement if activities grow quickly)

Global Studies: retirement replacement - language expert who adds value to the College's ESL programming

As Learning Communities grow, more tutors will be required and more sections of CSS 100 and CSS 101 will be required (could be filled with either full-tine or part-time faculty)

Brought over from subordinate departments:

The Human Services program regularly serves around 70 students per academic year.  Successfully expanding requires dedicated efforts of a full time faculty member.

The HMS Coordinator will

  • develop (utilizing best practices from Allied Health Departments) and oversee vetting process for HMS students prior to completing internships
  • act as liaison with CAPE and other potential downstream partner institutions (e.g. articulations with BSW and MSW granting institutions)
  • represent SUNY Orange at the Joint Mental Health Community Agencies (JMHCA) meetings
  • lead program assessment efforts
  • serve point person for HMS student advising
  • act as liaison with HMS faculty
  • act as liaison with Internship sites
  • assist chair in scheduling, especially Learning Communities
  • Teach two courses in Human Services, Psychology or Sociology

Research indicates that Learning Communities connected to programs and credit-bearing courses increase teh retention and success of students placed in developmental courses

Retirement of Full-Time Tenured Faculty member, Edgar Gutierrez, from the Department of Global Studies necessitates imperative replacement.

Consequences of this initiative not being funded

The Human Services program suffers due to lack of focused coordination.  Missed opportunities with students, agencies and other possible articulation partners

Unable to offer courses in Spanish and Italian at the Middletown Campus and reducing the number of FT and PT faculty at the Newburgh Campus to fulfill the staffing needs on the Middletown Campus.

Avoid over-reliance on Adjunct Faculty at a time of low availability of qualified part-time language instructors.
