Initiative TitleTo promote the degree programs of the Business Department (Community), especially the new degree program for AS Healthcare Administration.
Submitted in Previous Year(s)2021
Critical Information, Notes, Justification, Rationale

Research began in 2019 as an additional degree program for students who want to combine business and management skills with healthcare administration.  There is a regional demand for this type of position upon graduation with a Bachelor's degree.  There are several area and regional colleges with programs to develop articulation for transfer of an AS degree.

At SUNY Orange we have hundreds of students who are register for a liberal arts degree while waiting to enter one of the health professions degree programs, sometimes 2 years or more. The AS Healthcare Administration will provide a more tangible transfer degree if they decide not to wait on an opening in the Health Professions but still want to work in a health related field.

Research has shown that the Healthcare management and administration is a growing field. Adding this degree program will allow for growth in enrollment and a better choice for students who are currently pre-health liberal arts to be in a health related degree program while preparing for a later health degree program.

The Business Department (and Business degrees) is also participating in Guided Pathways, Prosperar, and the new SUNY ASAP initiatives. Business is one of two degree programs identified in the SUNY ASAP initiative.  These three initiative provide additional financial and academic supports to participating students. As new degree programs and initiative are implemented, we need to develop promotional materials to make potential students aware of them.

Consequences of this initiative not being funded

Consequences would be that students waiting to enter a health professions degree or those who decide that they no longer want to pursue a Health Professions degree will leave SUNY Orange with a Liberal Arts degree that does not provide a transition into a different business or health related field.
