Upgrade Simulation and on-Campus Multi-sensory Labs.

Initiative TitleUpgrade Simulation and on-Campus Multi-sensory Labs.
Submitted in Previous Year(s)2023
Critical Information, Notes, Justification, Rationale

Provide students with on-campus opportunities to practice skill sets using equipment/technology that they are expected to be able to use upon graduation. This technology will support instructional efforts for high-stakes skill testing. Currently, our medication dispensing cabinets are malfunctioning and on the verge of being obsolete. These cabinets are vital to our ability to replicate the experience of medication administration as it occurs in clinical agencies using the process that students are expected to perform upon graduation. Updated simulation equipment that includes warranties will ensure the availability of high-quality simulation experiences that enhance the development of critical thinking and hands-on skills. In addition, certain types of clinical experiences such as pediatrics and mental health are limited and could be enhanced by expanding simulation activities. New York State recently adopted a policy that simulation can be substituted for one-third of clinical hours. This provides us with an opportunity to improve clinical offerings in pediatrics and mental health. Simulation and skill lab facilities are variable between both campuses. The Newburgh campus offers an upgraded experience over the Middletown environment. To make both campus experiences equivalent we need a significant investment in the infrastructure of the skill lab and simulation area.

Consequences of this initiative not being funded

We have seen the transition to electronic medication dispensing and bar-code scanning in hospitals, nursing homes, and outpatient settings, yet we have not been able to update our equipment to match current practices. The skill testing area on the Middletown campus does not provide the same level of security and privacy as the Newburgh campus. In addition, the simulation suite lacks individual patient and control rooms that would improve the fidelity of the simulation experience. Without the investment in equipment and technology, we will be unable to provide students with on-campus experiences that will prepare them for employment in the current healthcare environment, therefore our students would not be employment-ready upon graduation.

Institutional Goals

Goal How will the initiative support this institutional goal?
We need to keep pace with new technologies and modernize instructional spaces in order to enhance the student experience to more closely approximate clinical environments in which they will be working.
Updated equipment and instructional spaces will more closely mimic clinical practice environments that will better prepare students to join the workforce upon graduation.
Upgrade of the multisensory laboratory and Simulation areas on the Middletown campus will assist students to develop the skills needed for employment in their field of study.

Action Steps

Action Step Responsible Party Order
Replace broken and outdated equipment, including the Med Dispense cabinets for each campus; purchase additional units to provide better access for students. Department Chairperson/Assistant chairperson 1
Construct wall with locking access door to separate the skill testing area from the skill practice area (BT 229) Department Chairperson/Assistant chairperson/AVP/VPAF 2
Construct walls separating the Simulation control room and simulated patient areas (BT 210) Department Chairperson/Assistant chairperson/AVP/VPAF 3

Expected Outcomes

Outcome Order
Equipment will be updated to current standards and be sufficient in number to provide adequate student access 1
Skill lab area will be renovated to provide a private and secure testing area separated from the skill practice area 2
Simulation lab will be renovated to provide separation between control room and patient care areas for a more realistic experience 3

Assessment Methods

Method Description Other Method Responsible Party
Tracking Usage of programs, services, participation can be tracked; demographic information may also be able to be collected. Department Chair/Assistant Chair
Student Surveys (Externally developed) Surveys such as the Community College Survey of Student Engagement (CCSSE), Student Opinion Survey (SOS), etc. are regularly administered at the College. The results of the survey describe the engagement and satisfaction of students with various college offices, staff, program and services. Department Chair/Assistant Chair
