Use technology effectively / plan and implement technological upgrades

Initiative TitleUse technology effectively / plan and implement technological upgrades
Submitted in Previous Year(s)No
Critical Information, Notes, Justification, Rationale

Overview:  This initiative would ensure that progress is made toward Objectives and Strategies of the Virtualization section of the Academic Master Plan.

First and foremost, it is important to establish regular, predictable allotments to ensure technology in programs that rely on currency of technology is maintained: Criminal Justice (Crime Zone Simulation equipment and software), Visual Communication (Adobe software), New Media (multiple pieces of equipment and software); Music Performance (new technology needed to implement music recording technology into program).

Other programs use technology but the programs listed above are those that are dependent upon reliable and current technology.

For New Media to expand to Newburgh Campus, a technology plan must be established.

Brought over from departmental plans:

During our 2010 assessment of the AAS Performing Arts: Music degree program, outside evaluators stressed the need for this course.

This course is a component of similar degree programs at other institutions.  For example, SUNY Purchase, with whom we have an articulation, SUNY Fredonia, Berklee College, Five Towns College, Ithaca College, and the University of Miami. We anticipate that this course would increase enrollment.

Current unit in VisCom lab needs to be replaced.  Has been submitted in previous budget requests.

Restitution of funding for departmental TV Studio supplies/maintenance budget line 2111-7350.  This line is critical to the operation of the studio and the health of the New Media program.

Enhance academic program with more technology and hands on type lab programming. Prepare lesson plans and conduct labs for use of force simulator. Lab coordinator will  work with local law enforcement to ensure safe transport and return of expensive equipment as well as update equipment regularly.

The SmartBoard in our classroom is over 10 years old.  (It was purchased when Nancy Carlson was Chair and held in storage for several years.)  It lacks many of the more user-friendly features that newer SmartBoards have, including  allowing for multiple people to interact with it simultaneously and access to updated Software like Smart lab, Smart amp and Smart response 2.

If a user-friendly, cost-effective portfolio system is implemented, all relevant student assignments would be readily available for assessment reporting in these three areas and would eliminate some of the duplicated effort that exists in our current method and evaluation of assessments

Consequences of this initiative not being funded

Missed opportunity for student recruitment and preparation for career success.

Given the number of Art and Communication sections we offer every semester, this technology is vital.

New Media program will suffer without ongoing maintenance of the TV Studio.

Use of Force Simulator will be under utilized and not kept up to date.

Without an updated SmartBoard we can not model and teach our students how to use the instructional technology currently being used in the PreK-Grade 12 classrooms.  This lack of familiarity with this technology and knowledge of how to use it effectively will put them at a disadvantage when student-teaching, attaining a job, and performing their duties as teacher.

Institutional Goals

Goal How will the initiative support this institutional goal?
As noted above we will be entering into collaborative community initiatives with our local law enforcement partners specifically in the area of the use of force. The enhanced educational advantages to our students will make them better candidates for employment by law enforcement agencies and by offering the technology to our local partners we will be enhancing their training initiatives that will greatly benefit our community.
The development of these labs will ensure that our students are keeping pace with the new technologies that are being introduced into the criminal justice field at an alarming pace. It will ensure the highest quality of lab programming into our academic courses.
We are offerring the Use of Force Technology to our local law enforcement partners (Sheriff's Department) in the training of their personnel. Already local law enforcement participated in a train the trainer session with Criminal Justice Instructors, a process that was mutually beneficial to both parties. We hope to develop more collaborative programming and will need a coordinator and space to realize these ambitious college and community initiatives
