Critical Information, Notes, Justification, Rationale

The use of ePortfolios to assess student learning, document a progression of academic and professional improvement, and serve as a platform for reflection are just some of the many benefits to its use. Several college governance committees and constituencies have investigated and identified potential ePortfolio platforms and best practices available for both students and faculty. The next step in realizing the full potential of ePortfolios and their benefits is a structured and cross-disciplinary pilot project.

Institutional Goals

Goal How will the initiative support this institutional goal?
ePortfolios offer benefits students, faculty and staff members of the college by providing a platform to enhance and measure student learning and growth, critical thinking and deep learning, as well as providing a customizable tool to demonstrate digital literacy throughout the academic journey from their first semester through graduation and transfer. ePortfolios also offer the opportunity to provide a more comprehensive view of the whole student through components such as academics, leadership roles, personal growth, internship experiences, community service, among other areas.
A ePortfolio option for students allows for a platform for college-wide collection of artifacts related to critical thinking, academic and personal growth, leadership and volunteer opportunities, resume building, and a host of other areas related to the student experience and student success.
The 2016-2020 SUNY Orange Academic Master Plan recommends the use of ePortfolios within the Virtualization theme (Objective #4, Strategy #4)."Adopt college-wide use of e-Portfolios, Open Educational Resources and other innovative tools to support student success." ePortfolios offer a platform to document other areas of growth and co-curricular experiences, in addition to course grades, during the SUNY Orange academic experience.
