Improve learning spaces within the Liberal Arts Division

Initiative TitleImprove learning spaces within the Liberal Arts Division

Critical Information, Notes, Justification, Rationale

Current equipment in the VisCom Lab (SMART Board and projection system) unreliable, thereby hampering teaching and learning.

HA 113 art classroom has never been equipped with adequate drafting tables for students.  Current tables are "hand-me-downs" from architecture program.

These classroom spaces have not been renovated (with the exception of new flooring in some classes) in approximately 20 years or more.  Space is 109 is under-utilized while other classrooms are small and poorly configured for utilizing varied pedagogical practices.

The Education department is fortunate to have the "hands-on learning lab", which is an area in our dedicated classroom that is modeled after an early childhood classroom.  In that lab, there are children's books, child-sized furniture, math manipulatives, art supplies, blocks, and other developmentally appropriate early childhood materials.  Students and instructors consistently use this area of the classroom to model sample lessons, explore materials, and rearrange the area to fit a particular thematic unit.  The department has long remarked that it would be extremely helpful to have a sink in the classroom to aid in the development (and clean up) of early childhood activities (particularly in the areas of science and art).  Unfortunately, there is not a water source in the classroom.  A portable sink is an excellent alternative to a traditional sink and would be a frequently used resource in the classroom.

Consequences of this initiative not being funded

Courses offered in OH 39 and OH 33 will be adversely affected.

Tables will remain inadequate for student work and seating capacity / class caps are limited.

Current desks are uncomfortable and do not suit the physical proportions of many students. They are also old and many need repair/cleaning.  In order to "flip" the classroom and encourage group work, furniture is needed that will make this possible.  In addition, these rooms are still equipped with chalk boards that should be replaced with white boards to minimize dust and allergic reactions.

Having a portable sink would make carrying out early childhood activities much easier.  Without this resource, there are some early childhood activities that are simply not possible or are very difficult to clean up.
