The Clinical Laboratory Science department offers 2 NAACLS accredited programs, MLT and Phlebotomy. These are one of the very few such accredited programs offered in NYS and we plan to continue to offer these programs. Our graduates are employed by area hospital labs and physician office labs like Crystal Run and Middletown Medical as soon as they complete the programs. Currently there is a national shortage of lab professionals and this will only increase because of current employees aging out and retiring. There will be an increased need for such professionals and we would like to increase our student numbers into the programs.

As the only FT faculty member and Chair of the department it is extremely difficult to manage 2 accredited programs and also be a service department to Nursing and Dental Hygiene and increase student numbers in the programs without the necessary resources, primarily faculty.

We have been requesting a FT faculty member  for several years and now it is in critical mode. Our adjunct faculty members teaching in the accredited MLT and phlebotomy programs have many years of experience and are NYS licensed professionals. However, they are not on campus full time and cannot dedicate valuable time to our students to ensure their success. This will be an issue with accreditation

The department must continue to purchase equipment to support and update the MLT and phlebotomy programs.

The lab spaces must be upgraded with current teaching equipment. Our lap tops which we use to project power points in class are old and unable to provide adequate support to our instructors. Currently, we have 3 old laptops that must be replaced. Instead, we are asking for 2 lab rooms to be equipped with Sharp Aquos boards and 1 lap top to be replaced for the microbiology lab.

We are in need of a part time technical assistant in Newburgh to support our plan to increase Microbiology offerings here. This person will be responsible for setting up the labs and organisms and to assist faculty teaching these courses and labs

To make clinical experiences of students easier to manage and to get away from the mountains of paper clutter, we would like to have the reports filled out by the proctors on a notebook immediately at the site during the clinical training. This would involve purchasing a minimum of 8 notebooks, one for each facility and developing software (hopefully by our IT staff).
