This academic year, the English Department will focus on evaluating our Freshman English 1 course offerings with a view toward better assessment and planning.  We will also take a serious look at our reading courses and investigate the possibilities of revising the cut-off score for Basic Reading Skills 2 (080) and offering a combined reading/writing course.  The Writing Consultancy will revise its website and increase its outreach to all College faculty as it continues to adapt to changes in affiliated programs' curricula.  The Department will continue to participate in initiatives to accelerate the progress of students in developmental courses and seek to expand its Learning Community offerings.

Department Goals

Specific things the department wishes to achieve or accomplish this academic year.

# Department Goal
1 Improve current and create new tools of assessment for Freshman English 1 to consider the possibilities of exit testing, portfolio grading, and assignment design to more concretely measure student mastery of current Student Learning Objectives.
2 Investigate the possibility of creating a new curriculum for combined reading/writing course to connect the skills in both areas and effect more accelerated and supported progress through developmental offerings
3 Research and pilot technological and online options for academic support in conjunction with Learning Assistance Service.
4 Collaborate with the CAPE ESL coordinator in creating a curriculum that would provide non-native speakers with a clear and pragmatic pathway into the College degree programs.
5 Expand the outreach of the Writing Consultancy to provide assistance to students and instructors in college- level, non-developmental coursework in addition to existing initiatives
6 Continue collaboration with the Math Department and the Developmental Oversight Team to continue and, if needed, expand current interventions offerings, in addition to solidifying these in the College Catalog.as permanent offerings
7 Initiate a plan to re-locate English Support Services (Reading, Writing and Technical Writing Centers) to the second-floor corridor of the Bio-Tech Building to provide comprehensive access for students to Department support options.
